Whether you are jetting off to a tropical island or planning to hang out outdoors with your BFF, there is definitely one item that should top your checklist no matter your destination: sunscreen.
As tomorrow is sunscreen day (don’t worry, we’ve got you covered), we have rounded up some misconceptions that surround the topical product to ensure you are totally protected from the sun, rain or shine.
“Sunscreen is only applicable on sunny days.”

Clouds filter out sunlight but not all UV rays, the bad ones are usually the ones that cause ageing and cancer. On average, clouds do reduce the amount of ultraviolet and radiation that reaches our skin, but it far from stops the damaging rays.UV rays can’t be felt, and that is why it is possible to end up with serious sunburns even on overcast days.
“A single application is good enough for the day.”
The philosophy that less is more is contextual, and it does not apply to the application of sunscreen, which should be reworked in every two hours. Ideally, your sunscreen should have an SPF of 15 or higher for adequate protection, or SPF of 30 or higher for an extended period of time spent outdoors. However, if you notice that your skin’s starting to feel tender or turn pink, reapply your sunscreen immediately, and don’t be afraid to use a generous amount.
“I have dark skin, so I don’t need to worry.”
It’s true that people with dark skin may not get sunburnt as easily as those with fair skin, however, they are not immune to skin cancer. Particularly susceptible areas include palms of the hands and soles of the feet—where the skin is lighter.
“As long as I apply sunscreen on my face, it’s OK.”
Skin cancer can happen anywhere the sun touches. While it may be good to protect your face, leaving the rest of your body without sunscreen makes you vulnerable not only to skin cancer, but also to signs of ageing as well.
