A Blast from the Past #Oscars

With the 89th Academy Awards set to take place over this weekend, it’s time to redirect our attention from the silver screen to the red carpet.

But, before we shine the spotlight on this season’s star-studded Oscars (that will undoubtedly raise the glam bar as it does with each passing year), we revisit 10 red carpet looks from the last 10 years that were at the zenith of their epoch.

2006: Michelle Williams in Vera Wang

Yellow isn’t always a popular choice of colour on the red carpet, simply because it requires sheer audacity to pull off such an exuberant colour. Michelle Williams took the plunge and did it anyway—the Vera Wang gown that she wore to the 2006 Oscars will live on as one of the most iconic looks to grace the red carpet in contemporary history.

2007: Gwyneth Paltrow in Zac Posen

A nude palette boded well for the fair-skinned actress. In a Zac Posen dress that was very much ahead of its time, we wouldn’t be surprised if another A-lister struts down the upcoming red carpet in a similar number ten years on.

2008: Marion Cotillard in Jean-Paul Gaultier

Marion Cotillard isn’t one to reserve white for her wedding. Showing up at the 2008 Oscars in an ivory, mermaid-like gown that was embellished with silvery scales, the actress could have easily looked like a fish out of water.

But, for all the picture-perfect shots it made, this dress is one of couture’s best.

2009: Vanessa Hudgens in Marchesa

A fail-safe colour isn’t always boring, and Vanessa Hudgen’s Marchesa gown is testament to that. Decorated with black and white feathers that blossom like petals on the bust area, her getup is black tie at its best.

2010: Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Couture

Jumping in on 2010’s hottest trend, Zoe Saldana was quick to emulate the ombré look on the puff of her dress instead of on her tresses. Beginning with a sparkling bustier and ending in a deep, rich shade of purple, any onlooker would be left enchanted by the combined beauty of the gown and its wearer.

2011: Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein

When fresh-faced Jennifer Lawrence made her Oscars debut in 2011, the world stopped—who knew simplicity could be so sophisticated? Her keen sense of style made her the one to watch at the next few Oscars, but nothing has quite topped the slinky red dress from Calvin Klein in all of its elegance.

2012: Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Angelina Jolie put her best leg forward in a strapless black gown that looked equal parts spunky and swanky. Remember all the memes it spawned? We do, and that’s why the dress is going down as one of the best in our memory.

2013: Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta

Amy Adams’ magnanimous silver-gray gown was a custom creation by Oscar de la Renta, who took impetuous inspiration from a black-and-white photo that Adams had shared with him. A pompous display that cascaded into intricate lashes that were pulled by hand, this extravagant piece we couldn’t leave off the list.

2014: Lupita Nyong’o in Prada

Who can forget how pretty Lupita Nyong’o looked in custom Prada at the 86th Academy Awards? The stark contrast of the pale blue dress thrusted her into the spotlight, which never truly strayed from her ever since.

2015: Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab

A frothy tulle? Check. Generous embellishments? Check. A plunging neckline? Check. Jennifer Lopez’s Elie Saab gown was unforgettable in all of its glory and cinched at the waist for that extra oomph.

2016: Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton

Alicia Vikander was the belle of the ball in her custom Louis Vuitton gown. Of princess-like bubble hems and an impeccable silver-and-yellow colour pairing, the frock twirled its way down the red carpet and into our hearts.
