Less is more seems to be the de rigueur. At both the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards and the 44th American Music Awards that transpired this month respectively, celebrity attendees left their reservations at home and arrived on the red carpet in skin-baring pieces that required more delicacy in gait and posture than usual.
But which red carpet appearances knocked it out of the park? We decide here in a sartorial showdown between the MTV EMAs and the AMAs.
Strutting down the red carpet in a periwinkle-hued sparkly gown, the Vampire Diaries actress looked drop dead gorgeous. If looks could kill…
Charli XCX’s kidult getup for the evening did not escape our attention— because with disco sequins that big, how could they? In a bubblegum shade, the ensemble was pared down with a soft pastel fur shawl, rendering the garish look with a touch of elegance.
Jourdan Dunn’s sheer number looked like a second skin on the model and it’s calculated cutouts reminded us very much of a suit of armour. We couldn’t help but compare the eveningwear to X-Men’s enigmatic Mystique—except Jourdan Dunn wore it better.
Is there anything that Gigi Hadid can’t do? Co-hosting the awards show alongside Jay Pharoah, the supermodel arrived at the red carpet in a gossamer crochet gown that was very much haute bohemian, with no holds barred on swanking her dewy shoulders.
Although Selena Gomez’s gown for the night seemed like a safer sartorial bet compared to say, Chrissy Teigen’s hip-high slits, the idea that she looked nonetheless ravishing (and was one of the best dressed of the night) was vox populi.
Glowing more radiant than ever in the waist-cinching piece, she was elected America’s Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist.
Perhaps a reflection of her assiduous advocacy of Hillary Clinton, Lady Gaga made an appearance in a low-cut power suit with exaggerated sleek lapels and a matching hat to top it off. Less shocking than it is suave, the androgynous piece makes for a surprisingly felicitous red carpet look.
Looking at the turnouts on the red carpet, our vote is with the American Music Awards for its assembly of better-dressed starlets. What do you think?
