First introduced in Pre-Fall 2016, the Prada Esplanade is no stranger to the fashionably-inclined. Like past Prada’s hits, the Esplanade is a structured beauty, designed to fit in seamlessly into the wardrobe of any career woman.
For Spring 2017, we see this classic silhouette imbued with the magic of pop art—an exuberant bag trend this season. The updated version features a striking Greca print that is made up of smaller leather pieces. So, how does it fare on our scorecard? Find out below.
The bag is crafted from two types of leather: Saffiano and City Calf (otherwise known as smooth calfskin). It has two top handles and an adjustable shoulder strap.
While Saffiano leather requires little to no care due to its ability to withstand abrasions, the smooth calfskin leather is susceptible to wear and scratch marks.
The bag is also adorned with a pretty hang tag and finished off with gold-plated hardware for that sought-after sophistication. If securing your bag is of utmost importance, the accompanying padlock and keys should come in handy.
The interior of the Esplanade contains Prada’s signature logo lining and is accessible by a zip top closure. You’ll be at your most organised since the bag is completed with one zipper pocket and two slip pockets—what more can you ask for?
Quality & Craftsmanship
Like all Prada products, quality is hardly an issue. The calfskin leather used is tanned with traditional methods. Stitching remains even and neat along the bag.
The only downside is that the hardware, particularly the zipper, may become discoloured over time due to wear. However, the discolouration process can definitely be prolonged if proper care is taken.
After every use, clean the hardware with a dry cotton ball or very soft cloth to remove any dust or dirt that they have acquired from the day. If you think they absolutely require more cleaning, you may do so with warm, soapy water but make sure they are also dried thoroughly.
Since the Esplanade was only introduced in Prada’s Pre-Fall 2016 collection, its success remains to be seen.
While it is highly implausible for the bag to surpass the popularity of Galleria, we still think that it will stay for at least a couple of seasons. Why? The timeless design allows the bag to transcend time, and if necessary, adapt to the different trends as well.
Who knows, with the right marketing and exposure, it just might be Prada’s next “it” bag.
Alternatively, if handbags are not your thing, why not consider the Esplanade in a crossbody form instead. These will surely come in handy for your city-hunting adventures!
